NFL Draft Profile: Michigan State WR B.J. Cunningham

Cunningham could be a late gem in the NFL Draft

When thinking about the great wide receivers that have walked through the Michigan State campus, a few might come to mind.

Charles Rogers, Derrick Mason, Plaxico Burress, Devin Thomas, Courtney Hawkins, Matt Trannon, Kirk Gibson, Mushin Muhammad, Gene Washington and Andre Rison were all great receivers during their time at MSU, but none of them can say they have the school record for receiving yards, or catches.

Those records belong to B.J. Cunningham.

The Westerville, Ohio native was ranked a three-star recruit for both Scout.com and Rivals.com. coming into college. For ESPN, Cunningham scored just a mere 70 on a scale of 90 for how much potential he had.

Once on the campus of MSU, Cunningham contributed right away on the field.

As a freshman, Cunningham caught 41 balls for 528 yards. Each year his numbers increased and as a senior Cunningham caught 79 balls, for 1,306 yards and 12 touchdowns.

His career totals are impressive.

In 51 games played he recorded 218 receptions, 3,086 yards and 25 touchdowns. The yards and catches are school records, while the 25 touchdowns is only two behind Charles Roger’s record of 27.

Cunningham has been the most consistent, sure handed receiver for the Spartans over the last three years.

Worthy Of Draft: Breaking News: Michigan State All-American DT Jerel Worthy Hires Agent, Headed For Draft

Michigan State  defensive tackle Jerel Worthy has reportedly hired a agent. The hiring means that Worthy is foregoing his senior season at MSU and entering his name in the 2012 NFL draft.

Worthy has been projected anywhere from a top 20 pick to a late 2nd round selection.

The junior was a huge piece of one of the best defenses in the nation this season. Worthy often controlled the line of scrimmage in games and spear headed MSU’s aggressive defense.

The 6’3 310 pound tackle from Huber Heights, Ohio was named an All-American this year. Throughout his career at MSU, Worthy has progressed from a freshmen to an dominate force.

His production has stayed the same throughout his career, with 37 total tackles in 2009, 40 in 2010 and 30 in 2011. Production dropped for Worthy as a junior but only because he was constantly double teamed. For his career, Worthy has 107 tackles, 12 sacks, and 22 tackles for loss.

Faith In Spartans Pays Off, Defeat Georgia 33-30 In Triple OT

Sophomore Le'Veon Bell goes airborne over Georgia defenders in a 33-30 victory

Coach Mark Dantonio can cross another goal off his list at Michigan State.

The Michigan State Spartans beat the Georgia Bulldogs 33-30 in triple overtime to win the Outback Bowl. The bowl victory is MSU’s first since 2001 and it’s first under Dantonio in five attempts.

The game looked like it might get out of hand in the first half when Georgia scored a safety, returned a punt 92 yards, and caught an 80 yard touchdown pass to give them a 16-0 lead heading into halftime.

Michigan State’s defense should be recognized for winning this game.It did an incredible job time after time bailing out the offense, and creating turnovers.

At one point Michigan State’s offense went three and out on 8 consecutive drives.

Bowl Preview: Michigan State Plays Georgia In Outback Bowl

Mark Dantonio looks to guide MSU to it's first bowl win under his reign.

Head coach Mark Dantonio had big plans for Michigan State’s football program when he signed on to become the coach five years ago.

He has always wanted MSU to become a respectable program that consistently competes for championships.

His vision of Michigan State becomes more of a reality with each year that he has coached.

Under Dantonio the MSU football program has gone to five straight bowl games, won a Big Ten championship, played in the first Big Ten conference championship game, has had back-to-back double digit win seasons, and currently has a four-game winning streak against rival Michigan.

With all these accomplishments, there is still one goal that Dantonio has yet to achieve – win a bowl game.
